Too much love. A villanelle.

Is there such a thing as too much love,
And is it wrong to love one so?

Devour me Oh love!
Distill all pretence
Bring your obsession
Fears and suspicions
All the scars that make you mistrust
Bring them all
Be free
And see that I’ll love you still

For against some wisdom, belief must defy
To be loved gives power, but power is a burden
And love has darkened, deep within your eyes

You web possession around me like a prize
And I dorn your silken jealousy, swayed but uncertain
For against some wisdom, belief must defy

Your trauma is shrouded in a veil of lies
Your pain is drunk behind betrayal’s curtain
And love has darkened, deep within your eyes

To stay with you, is to walk the isle of my heart’s demise
To leave you behind, is to regret our forsaken love lane
For against some wisdom, belief must defy

In greed and passion, infatuation writhes
Your desire turns to distress, all of a sudden
And love has darkened, deep within your eyes

This shade of love is a potent surprise
Intense with forever, a bloom in love’s den
For against some wisdom, belief must defy
And love has darkened deep within your eyes

The perfect love is often made and rarely found,
So where would you rather start,
With too little,
Or too much?

This is my first Villanelle, and believe me when I say it’s one of, if not the most challenging poetry form I’ve ever attempted.
To follow the strict rhyme scheme, and still put enough of what I wanted to share and engage you with, literally kept me up most of last night.

I hope you enjoy it.

How to write a Villanelle
I’ll keep practicing.

Stay safe everyone, and stay loving.

Yeah but it’s quite different for each one. Though yes, love is able to heal all the problems highlighted in this piece. The main theme

A great villanelle, and as ever, your writing made me think!

Thank you so much Ingrid. That bit you’ve quoted is mostly intended to show that love should be accepting and a place where all can be shared and thus conquered together. Otherwise the other option is suffering in silence.๐Ÿ˜Œ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ

Worth spending the time on, Jude. Superbly done! My favourite phrase (among many): ‘You web possession around me like a prize…’ I feel a spider closing in on its prey.

Thank you so much Chris. I really also wanted to highlight how some people only know how to love in the wrong ways, but that it doesn’t mean they do not love. There are other factors that lead to this and getting them to open up or finding out is a beginning to healing such obstacles.

Love makes the world go ’round but as the song goes, “too much love will kill you”, so I guess just enough should be our aim.
