Friend. Mental awareness

In darkness she finds a friend
For the light of day shines too bright
Sunrise exposing the scars
Inflaming the wounds
Laying her bare for all to see
Help me father, cradle me once again mother
I cannot bare this pain
This loneliness and regret!
But they’ve grown too tired of trying
Wearied by all her relapses
Each one worse than the last
A problem child they’ve abandoned to fate
‘Show us you can really change,’ they now chorus with each new cry for help!
In catholic school she was taught
‘If you take your own life, eternal damnation awaits’
But the darkness is not so bad, she thinks
All in the light shun and avoid me
And I do not blame them; I’d avoid me too!
Maybe this world is not where I belong
Maybe in the darkness, my true friends await.
She does not see how dark the friend in darkness really is
How sinister and spiteful
For deception thrives away from the light
And those sweetened calls
Are rotten to the core!
But they are all she has
There is no one else
The calls whisper each night;
“Just a slit
Just a few extra pills
A leap or a noose will make them hurt
Make them grieve
Make them regret!
If you do this you’ll find us, they say
For in the darkness, your true happiness awaits”
All of it; LIES!

The calls of despair are often answered by evil.
For the light must be wielded.
And if you do not reach out,
Then who will?

Family is often a home.
But they rarely understand.
For there is much they do not see,
And much they do not know.
In times of depression and distress,
It is us; friends, who have the power-
To wield the light that keeps darkness at bay.

Let us check on our friends.
Let us reach out to those we hold; or have ever held dear!

A drink
A laugh
A trip down memory lane
A call
A text
A thought made a gesture
It’s the little things that wield the softest light
A path to our best light.

I hope this reminds you to reach out to someone.

I’ve lost someone to suicide before, so I reach out as often as I can since then; actually have a schedule for outreach. A new friend of mine lost one of her friends to suicide recently and I’d already written a draft on mental health; but I shelved it for later and wrote this last night.
For some reason it felt important that I do it now.

Looking forward to your thoughts.

Stay safe everyone, stay loving.
