Dearest Evelyn,
You looked beautiful today. I hate yellow but loved it on you. I’ll be sure to get you something better, something blue. Can’t wait to see you again tonight.
~Soulmate~
Evelyn read the attached note as she carried a bouquet of gorgeous tulips from her doorstep to the kitchen table.
The flowers were her favorite shades; purples, yellows and whites. Their fragrance was wrought allover her fondest romantic memories; but it was not reminiscence that their beauty evoked, nor was it passion that their scent effervesced;
It was fear!

Fear of the secret admirer who’d at first, brought smiles to her lonely world,
Who’d made her feel truly wanted for once,
A ray of hope now become this everpresent shadow;
this stalker who besmirched even the sweetest gestures
Who was this weirdo – this ‘soulmate’ that knew her so well?
– this creep who watched and acted from the shadows?
Crumpling her thoughts away, she walked to the fridge and opened it.
There was another note on top of the salad.
Apple in the bunch
Cherry on a cake
If only for a taste
This world I’d give to you.
~Soulmate~
Her fingers trembled as she gripped the corny poetry. Nobody else had her apartment keys.
She was scared now but also, despite herself, oddly pleased;
that she could still evoke such passions in someone,
That someone thought she deserved to be lavished with gifts and treats.
Her phone lit up; a text, unknown number..
‘Don’t you think pink will look good on you tonight? It’s my favorite! ~soulmate~‘

Now she was truly frightened.
Thankfully she’d reported this stranger to the police, and Officer Annie Mills had taken an interest. She fumbled and dialed the number.
“It’s okay, stay calm, lock the door. I’ll be there in no time,” Officer Mills said.
Evelyn sat at the kitchen table thinking;
She’d secretly liked her secret admirer. Even when he got weird, he never seemed to be the type that would hurt her.
But then, why didn’t he just reach out in person? God knows she could use some real romance in her life,
Some slow old-fashioned love in this fast-paced world…

A jingly tune rang from inside her apartment.
She froze! Dread! Shock! He was here!
The ringing was coming from the bedroom corridor.
Slowly it grew louder, drawing near.
Footsteps!
Clack, clack, clack!
Round the corner, someone stepped, Evelyn’s mouth fell open-
It was Officer Annie Mills!
A lacy pink dress held up in one hand
A pointed gun in the other
And mischief in her smile
“Hey soulmate, shall we?” the officer asked.
